As the population ages, many families face the burden of long-term care for bedridden, stroke-stricken, or mobility-impaired relatives, bearing not only heavy caregiving responsibilities but also high medical and equipment costs. The demand for assistive devices that help patients move and improve their quality of life continues to grow.
To ease this burden, the Tzu Chi Malacca established an Assistive Device Service Center in 2021. The center collects, repairs, and thoroughly disinfects recycled or donated second-hand assistive devices—including hospital beds, crutches, walkers, wheelchairs, cushions, and toilet seats—and provides them free of charge on a rental basis.
When users no longer need the devices, they simply return them to the center for further testing and cleaning, ensuring the items can benefit another family. This cycle not only allows patients to use the devices with greater peace of mind and reduces family caregiving costs, but also extends the lifespan of the equipment, reduces resource waste, and preserves the goodwill of each donor.
The existence of the Tzu Chi Assistive Device Centers is not only about reusing materials, but also about practicing environmental protection, compassion, and mutual assistance—allowing love to circulate among families and providing support to more people in need.
